Atticus Ross is an English Musician, Songwriter and Sound Engineer, who is most noted for his work with Trent Reznor and their soundtrack and score for the films ‘The Social Network’ and ‘The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo’.
The piece of work that caught my attention was his original film score for the 2014 Film ‘Love and Mercy’ about the life of Brian Wilson, which was built up from samples of clips of Brian Wilson talking, Beach Boys songs and additional instrumentation. This way of working really inspired me to try it you myself and shift the process into my practice, building on last years experiments with soundtracks for art installations.
Another influence on his score was the Beatles track ‘Revolution 9’ with its use of mashed up samples to represent Brian Wilson’s Auditory Hallucinations and memories of the 1960’s in the film. This type of work is something that I will use and experiment with in my next piece of work.
This Clip above demonstrates Atticus Ross’s ‘Bed Montage’ part of the film score and its use of Mashed up samples using stems from Beach Boys songs, audio clips of Brian and his father etc talking aswell as the use of additional instrumentation to create a film score that acts like a sound collage, taking influence from ‘Revolution 9’.
